3. What education and/or training did Marcellus Waller receive before opening his jewelry store?

Marcellus’ parents died when he was a mere child and he was reared by his grandparents, Absalom and Eliza Mitchell Waller. Marcellus attended school through about 3rd grade, but at an early age, he was hired out to work for a family in Hanover County and had no opportunity to secure an education. Marcellus’ grandfather and his uncle, Benjamin T. Waller, were blacksmiths and Marcellus inherited a mechanical skill that was destined to find its expression in the watch, clock and jewelry repair business.
